Istanbul's most recognizable landmarks include the Kız Kulesi Üsküdar, also known in English as Maiden’s Tower or Bosphorus Tower. This tower is located on a tiny natural island in the Bosphorus Strait, directly off the coast of Asian Istanbul. Athenian military leaders constructed the original tower during the 5th century to monitor and control ships passing through the strategically important Bosphorus waterway, as well as to collect tolls from vessels. The Byzantine Empire continued this function by stretching a chain from the tower to the historic peninsula on the mainland.
