Mahjong, a game with numerous variants, including majiang, mah jongg, and others, has its roots in China. Typically played by four players, although some versions are found in South Korea and Japan where three-player games are common. The game is popular throughout Eastern Asia and South East Asia, while having a smaller following in Western countries. Like the card game rummy, mahjong requires skill, strategy, and calculation, as well as an element of chance.
