Magnetic School Locker Shelf
prusaprinters

My son needed a small shelf for the inside of his school locker. We designed this magnetic, adjustable shelf to fit his iPhone, and a few other little items. The design uses ten (10) 4mm x 8mm neodymium magnets embedded into the object mid-print.

Print instructions

This model makes use of the ability to embed magnets into the print itself by automatically pausing for a filament change, inserting the magnets, and then resuming the print. This "entombs" the magnet in a snug fitting so that it won't pop out during use.

The included gCode will pause for filament change after layer 29 is complete. This occurred at approximately 1h 35m into the print. This allows you to place the magnets in the housings, and then quickly wipe down the top of the magnets to remove any/all oils. Resuming the print will then have the printer cover the magnets, permanently fixing them into the shelf.

Note: Since the bed of the printer is heated, I let the magnets sit in housings for a minute or two before restarting the print. This allowed the magnets to heat up a little, rather than being cold. I'm not entirely sure this made a difference or not, but it felt right, so I did it. If you run in to a different experience, please let me know.

Otherwise, this was a very simple print. Took some time (9h) to complete.

Designed in Fusion360. Sliced with PrusaSlicer 2.0.
