Magnetic plate stand
thingiverse
This is a budget-friendly and straightforward-to-assemble magnetic plate stand designed for use with 96-well PCR plates. It employs 24 axially-magnetized cylindrical neodymium magnets measuring 5/16 x 5/16 inches, similar to those available at K&J Magnetics (www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D55), for magnetic bead assays. The beads are drawn to the sides of each well, enabling pipette tips to reach the bottom without disturbing the beads. The plate features a notched profile for aligning fully-skirted plates and indentations to position half- or unskirted plates. Two versions have been included with varying magnet protrusions - the 3mm is suitable for general use, but for low-volume cleanups (< 15 µL), the maximum magnetic field is above the meniscus, causing the beads to adhere poorly. The 1.5mm stickout version performs better in these situations, but it requires more care when using pipette tips.
