I am using a free spinning spool holder that attaches magnetically. I printed the 3-inch version, and in hindsight, it could have been longer; if I encounter any issues, I'll print out the 4-inch long version. This device was designed specifically for Ultimaker brand filament spools. The cart where we put our Ultimaker2 has steel side panels.
