Magnetic Corner and Edge Hold Downs for Laser Honeycombs Previously, large (25mmx3mm) magnets were used on their own but after two were dropped and shattered a better option was needed to prevent similar accidents. This new design affects only 3mm of the cutting area around the edges. The honeycomb has an aluminum frame, while the honeycomb itself is made of steel that protrudes into the honeycomb frame housing, allowing magnets to still work on the edges. 10mm diameter by 3mm thick magnets were used in this design. A hold down lip is 2mm high and specifically designed for my Honeycomb and 3.175mm thick MDF sheets. Adjust these designs to suit your own requirements. Model files with a "WSup" suffix have integrated support for the magnet cylinder holes. Depending on your nozzle size and printer settings, the support may be ignored by your slicer. Use the integrated support models only if your slicer does not bridge gaps well or your support is difficult to remove. The floor of the magnet holders is 1mm thick so it can be reamed deeper for maximum magnetic effect. Hold downs could be potentially laser cut and ridges/blind holes (progressively) engraved, but this may take longer. Alternatively, you could design and cut the hold downs using multiple thicknesses of material and glue them together. Warning: Magnets are potentially hazardous. Use with caution.
