Magnetic hex shells for Settlers of Catan
prusaprinters

These shells have magnets so that Settlers of Catan hexes stick together and the board doesn't get shuffled around. I was heavily inspired by the model this is remixed from, but I made these models from the ground up with the following ideas:

Minimalist approach to require the least amount of material

Print with 0% infill

Uses six magnets per hex instead of twelve

Both square and cylinder magnets work

Make sure to alternate the polarity between each side of an individual hex

Magnets are placed inside the hex

Glue optional

Option to have magnets embedded inside the print (*)

Slight downside is a bit less magnetic force

Tight tolerance around Catan hex which grab onto the hex

This prevents loose magnets falling out

Scale print up/down by 1% if too tight/loose, or glue magnets in

The 3mm magnets are quite weak, but when several hexes are combined they provide a sufficiently stable board to play on. Use the 4mm version if you really don't want hexes to separate. (I have yet to test the 4mm version)

* I provided Gcodes with pauses at the correct height to insert the magnets. For both 3mm and 4mm in both Prusament PLA and PETG on a Prusa MINI. These are printed one by one to have enough clearance to insert the magnets on all sides. The magnets will be held in place by the magnetic print bed. I don't recommend printing these on a printer without a magnetic bed since the magnets would like to stick to hotend screws that are usually made out of steel. (Be aware that print bed will be HOT, especially when printing in PETG)

If you really like to show off how much you love Catan, you can also place them on your fridge :) (Special fridge version added for a 10mm diameter magnet up to 4mm tall, but any version sticks to a fridge)
