This is a custom magnetic box I designed as a gift box for each of my groomsmen at my wedding. I wanted something substantial and it had to fit all their gifts inside just right.

I used the pause print to insert the magnets. Each box requires eight 3mm x 8mm magnets. I used these:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07GTM383S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The design is rather simple. The two halves are identical except for the engraving. So you just need two wall pieces, a top and a bottom. The top I have included is blank so you can customize to your liking. If you're going with blank then just print two walls and 2 tops.

You may wonder why I split the box in such a way. In order to get a strong connection with the magnets they have to be only a couple of layers into the part, but if you print the side that is only a couple of layers on top after inserting the magnet it is never clean enough. So it is best to print the mating surfaces against the bed. However, I didn't want to have to use a ton of support and the bridging was never going to work so I just split it up and glued the top/bottom on afterward.

This also allowed me to make a slight lip around the edge which helps when doming the resin.

Which brings me to the resin. I highly recommend adding resin to finish off your 3D printed parts. It really just takes it to the next level. I used art resin.

Bonus, you can eat off the box because art resin is food safe = ).

I did a filament swap to white when printing the lid for that extra pop when you open the box.

The custom name was done using a single extruder multi material print with manual swaps.

The initials engraved into the leather of the suspenders was also done using 3D printing ha ha.

My groomsmen were blown away and I think the box ended up being their favorite part.

Parts Needed:

8 - 3mm x 8 mm round magnets

Art Resin
