Magnetic Fly Reel

Magnetic Fly Reel

This is a custom-made fly fishing reel that I designed myself. My main goal was to create something functional with as few moving parts as possible for simplicity of assembly and printing. I also aimed to eliminate the clicking sound associated with many fly reels by using magnets to generate resistance on the line. This effect is achieved by arranging magnets attracted to each other on opposite sides of the reel, providing a smooth operation as you pull out line, forcing each pair of magnets further apart from one another. Remixing this project is encouraged! I have shared the sketchup file used for designing it to facilitate easier understanding and improvement. The idea was inspired by krapouere's fishing reel, which motivated me to take on this project myself. While I haven't had the chance to test it out in a real river setting yet, I'm hoping to do so soon. Wishing you a productive and enjoyable DIY journey! Instructions Before printing any parts, note that your 3D printer may require adjusting for tight tolerances. A few quick sandings might be necessary to smooth out certain areas. For assembly, gather the following components: disk magnets, a single 608 skate bearing, and machine screws. Step 1: Attach "attachment" part to "magnet_half" using flat head machine screws for a secure connection. Step 2: Connect "handle_small" to "handle_half" using a nut or bolt and tighten with a machine screw. Step 3: Fit a washer and the 608 bearing onto an M8 bolt. Pass this assembly through the center of "handle_half", followed by "magnet_half", securing everything into place. Step 4: Arrange the magnets such that opposite sides of each pair are attracted when aligned across from one another on both halves, creating 3 major points of attraction for each handle revolution with a total of six magnets. Assembly Note: For a more even spread of attractions, arrange the poles to face the same direction for each respective half. Step 5: Secure the magnets firmly in place by adding a generous portion of hot glue or adhesive into each holder. Use suitable adhesives to secure this operation - "Disc Neodymium Magnets Dia 1/2X1/8"" have worked effectively for me." Allow ample time for adhesives to fully dry before moving on to the final steps. Step 6: Apply a decent length of line, attach it securely to your rod, tie on a fly and enjoy your first catches! The biggest hurdle lies ahead!
