Magnet Wire Coil Winding Jig
thingiverse
A versatile coil-winding fixture designed to produce tight 1mm thick coils made from 40 gauge wire with a remarkable 900 turns per coil. This clever design secures the delicate wires together using strategically applied superglue droplets while winding, preventing unwound threads and preserving their precise configuration. Additional stability is provided by carefully wrapping kapton tape around the assembly to prevent sticking issues. Sleek metal parts printed on demand are equipped with heat-set threaded inserts from McMaster-Carr, accommodating 4-40 screws securely for an unyielding hold throughout each operation. To add further durability and mechanical integrity, nylon standoffs measure 1.5" long and are coupled with corresponding hex nuts and screws to provide the coil support needed for handling delicate turns. Update: Upon testing various materials, we discovered that repurposed sewing machine bobbins effectively maintain uniform tension while creating each winding pass, reducing coil variability significantly. We have also identified a more effective bonding technique, utilizing red fingernail polish which dissolves completely in acetone once dissolved after hardening and thus eliminates adhesive residue issues after completion
