Magnet/Pin Capillary Holder for ANL Advanced Photon Source SBC X-Ray Crystallography Beam-line Prep (Parametric)
thingiverse
This design is specifically created for the Structural Biology Center at Argonne National Lab as a mounting system for x-ray crystallography at the Advanced Photon Source. The model is fully parametrized, allowing users to adjust tolerances and exact size if necessary by modifying parameters within the OpenSCAD file. OpenSCAD is free software that can be easily used to make changes if required. To assemble the mount, printing software should be utilized to identify the last layer where the top remains open, then paused on that layer. Next, the magnet is inserted into place before continuing the print process as seen in image 5. This design can be printed with or without the groove feature. Additionally, it can be printed with an open bottom to facilitate pushing the magnet into place from below. To achieve this, set "Embedded" to false within the parameters. However, stopping the print and placing the magnet in position may still be necessary to prevent sagging of the plastic. Moreover, increasing MagnetShellRadiusTol might be beneficial for ease of sliding the magnet in and out. PRO-TIPS: - Manually move the print head away from the print when paused using software to avoid melting the print. - Keep the magnet on the print-bed to facilitate easy printing. - Some printers may struggle to print onto magnets, so a poker or metal forceps might be needed to press down hot plastic over the magnet for initial layers. This could potentially ruin the groove feature, prompting users to set "Groove" to false.
