Magma interaction at Bingie Bingie Point 2
sketchfab
Two distinct phases are evident within the Tuross Head Tonalite: tonalite and various mafic diorites. Characteristic features reminiscent of sedimentary deposits can be observed here, including load casts, rip-up clasts, and flame structures that form in response to magma movements. The model suggests that tonalitic magma was injected over a diottic layer, with the main body of diorite hidden from view beneath the initial observation point. A large population of diorite magmatic enclaves is visible within the overlying tonalite, decreasing in abundance as distance increases from the diorite contact. These enclaves are analogous to rip-up clasts found in sedimentary sequences, where tonalite magma plucks off 'clasts' of diorite from the underlying magma body. Gaps in the model correspond to a pool of water that once occupied this area. The outcrop measures approximately 4 by 3 meters.
