Who is Depicted? Mary, known by various titles, styles, and honorifics, was a 1st-century Galilean Jewish woman of Nazareth and the mother of Jesus, according to the New Testament and the Quran. Technical/Specification about the Statue Relief is a sculptural technique where elements remain attached to a solid background of the same material. The term relief comes from the Latin verb relevo, which means "to raise." Creating a sculpture in relief gives the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. What happens when cutting a relief from a flat surface of stone or wood is actually lowering the field, leaving unsculpted parts seemingly raised. The technique involves considerable chiseling away of the background, which is time-consuming. On the other hand, a relief saves forming the rear of a subject and is less fragile and more securely fixed than a sculpture in the round. Different degrees of relief depend on the degree of projection of the sculpted form from the field. The full range includes high relief, where more than 50% of the depth is shown and there may be undercut areas. Mid-relief has a moderate level of projection, while low-relief is only slightly lower than the sculpted elements. Shallow-relief or rilievo schiacciato has a very slight lowering of the plane. The distinction between high relief and low relief is clear and important. Many works combine areas in more than one degree of relief, sometimes sliding between them in a single figure. The opposite of relief sculpture is counter-relief, intaglio, or cavo-rilievo, where the form is cut into the field rather than rising from it. More about the Artist Luca della Robbia was an Italian sculptor from Florence, noted for his glazed terracotta roundels. He developed a technique that he used to create his works. After developing this technique in the early 1440s, he mainly produced terracotta thereafter and passed the technique on to his nephew Andrea della Robbia and great-nephew Giovanni della Robbia. His large workshop produced both cheaper works cast from molds and more expensive one-off individually modeled pieces. The glaze made his creations more durable outdoors, making them suitable for use on building exteriors.
