Madonna of Žinkovy

The Madonna of Žinkovy honors a long-standing tradition of French sculpting that spans across Upper Rhineland and Southern Germany regions. The modeling of Christ's head and pose draws parallels with masterpieces by the creator of the Michle Madonna. Christ's hand holds a bird, foreshadowing His future suffering: legend has it that this very bird plucked at Christ's thorn as He made His way to Calvary. This symbol first emerged in Bohemia during the early 14th century as an illustration within the manuscript penned by Elizabeth Rejčka, Queen of Bohemia, who married Wenceslas II in the beginning of the 14th century.
