Madonna col Bambino
myminifactory
Acquired by the Castello Sforzesco Museum in 1999, the work portrays the Madonna with Child with stunning clarity. However, it's unlikely that the identification of the subject is beyond question. The religious attributes and position of the female figure strongly evoke ancient Roman sculptures. Although there is no record of the artist's time spent in Rome, it's undeniable that he had access to study classical models, absorbing the technical and poetic teachings of Michelangelo Buonarroti. The fruits of these studies are evident in the intricate classical arrangement of the drapery and the impressive monumental representation of the subjects. The mastery in handling the marble, conquering the technical challenges of the raw material with incredible results, reaches its pinnacle in the depiction of the skin and the remarkably transparent rendering of the veil. At the centre of the base is the head of the screaming Medusa, the sculptural quality of which recalls the contemporary craftsmanship executed by Lombard goldsmiths.
