Madonna and the Child

myminifactory

This is a cast of marble original relief portraying the Virgin Mother and her Infant Son. The relief was installed at the altar of Saint Bartholomew's Church. The Virgin Mother and Child icon type dominates Christian imagery worldwide, subdivided into traditional categories especially in Eastern Orthodox iconography, often identified by the location of a notable icon of this type, such as the Theotokos of Vladimir, Agiosoritissa, Blachernitissa, etc., or descriptive of the depicted posture, as in Hodegetria, Eleusa, etc. The term Virgin Mother enters English language usage in the 17th century, primarily referring to works of the Italian Renaissance. In an Eastern Orthodox context, such images are typically known as Theotokos. "Virgin Mother" may be used generally to describe representations of Mary, with or without her infant son Jesus, focusing attention on and centering the image around the Virgin, possibly flanked or surrounded by angels or saints.
