Madonna and child with angels

myminifactory

This type of representation, with the Virgin sitting majestically on a throne, her child by her side and surrounded by angels, is known as a Maestà. It emerged in the 4th century and has undergone significant evolution over time. These depictions became extremely popular in Italy during the late Middle Ages, exemplified by Duccio's Madonna Rucellai. Even though this sculpture dates back to the 14th century, it can be classified as belonging to the early Renaissance. Its aesthetic codes diverge from those of Gothic art but still fall short of fully embracing the characteristics of the Renaissance. The Virgin's rounded and delicate features evoke a sense of Classical Greek or Roman influences in the viewer.
