The Madonna of Cesky Krumlov stands out as a cornerstone work in the International style of sculpting. Acquired at the dawn of the 20th century, this iconic statue now resides in the esteemed collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The renowned composition has been repeatedly replicated in contemporary copies and variants, with the Madonna of Hallstatt near Salzburg being a notable example. Due to material scarcity, the statue was crafted from artificial stone rather than the marly limestone native to Prague. In Salzburg, this practice was commonplace. The sculptor worked on a cast block, utilizing tools typically employed for wood-carving due to the soft material's texture, similar to freshly quarried stone.
