Maddalena Penitente, a marble masterpiece, measures about 90 cm tall and was crafted by the renowned Treviso sculptor Antonio Canova between 1793 and 1796. Acquired by French diplomat Commissioner Juliot, it changed hands in 1808 to the influential Milanese patron Count Giovanni Battista Sommariva, who passed it down after his demise to Mr. d'Aguado. The original version is safely preserved at Palazzo Doria-Tursi within the Strada Nuova Museums' exhibition route in Genoa, while a copy resides at the Antonio Canova Gipsoteca Museum.
