The Ford Mustang Mach 1, initially launched in August 1968 for the 1969 model year, is a performance-focused option package of the iconic Ford Mustang. The Mach 1 name graced high-performance Mustangs until it was retired in 1978. In 2003, as part of a Ford heritage program, the Mach 1 package returned on the New Edge platform, with design elements mirroring the original 1969 model to pay homage to its roots. This iteration lasted till the 2004 model year, succeeded by the fifth-generation Mustang. The name "Mach 1" was first used in 1969 for a concept called the "Levacar Mach I," a futuristic vehicle that propelled itself using air cushion technology on a circular platform at the Ford Rotunda.
