When upgrading to a new Macbook, I wanted my old one to be put to good use in my shed but I really wanted a mobile solution AND the option to have a big screen and wireless keyboard.

I know there are several docks available for the newer Macbooks, but sadly none of the ones for my type of Macbook (A1398) are sold anymore

So I decided to build my own.

It's designed for maximum airflow, blocking the vents as little as possible and allowing for fresh air to pass through the bottom of the dock.

First print the 2 large parts A and B.

Then fit your macbook, plug in all the ports and hotglue the bejeesus out of the port connections (on the bottom of the dock).

Start small though just to fixate (the port openings should fit quite snugly with the cables that I used, of course every cable is different)

Then take out the macbook and go all out with the glue.

When everything fixed, slide the parts A and B together around the macbook, look for the best fit and measure the opening between A and B. Then print the spacer part, scaled on one axis to the right measurement you just took.

Clamp the macbook by adding some felt covered tape to the inside of the dock

Glue all 3 parts together with CA glue

Connect screen, usb hub, 3,5mm jack and thunderbolt to DP cable to your external monitor setup and boom, you're ready to go

Printed with:

supports

0,3mm layer height 0,6mm nozzle

PLA+

I have been using this thing for 6 months now, and safe for 2 glue touch ups to the connections, I haven't had any problems.
