The M61 was a standardized fragmentation hand grenade widely adopted by US and Canadian forces during the Cold War. Primarily issued in great numbers, this variant of the M26A1 production series grenade featured an additional safety clip that eliminated accidental detonations when the base pin was inadvertently pulled. The Jungle Clip, developed based on American experiences in Vietnam's jungles, was designed to prevent snagging and subsequent lethal detonations. Replaced by the modern M67 series after the war, the M26 and M61 types were plagued by detonations caused by snagging on jungle underbrush. Outwardly, the M61 resembled its predecessor, the M26 family, with a smooth-sided case, integrated safety pin, curved lever, and Jungle Clip. The operator's manual activation sequence involved pulling the safety pin ring, then the clip, and releasing the lever (spoon) to initiate the fuse, which triggered an internal firing pin striking the primer within four to five seconds - ample time for the operator to throw the grenade without fear of return fire.
