During the build of my J-Bot, M5 square nuts frequently left damage on the v-slot when over-tightened, causing frustrating problems. They were also notoriously difficult to start threading if the M5 screw wasn't quite long enough or if the nut wasn't sitting perfectly parallel to the face of the extrusion. To prevent these issues from arising, I turned to specialized inserts that provide a solution. While they do require insertion from the ends of the rail, their benefits far outweigh any minor inconvenience. In hindsight, I believe pre-assembly t-nuts are probably the best choice for most builders. However, if you've already invested in square nuts, these inserts can help mitigate the problems mentioned above.
