The M48 Patton is a main battle tank conceived in America, bearing the name of General George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. Third Army during World War II and an early proponent for tank use on the battlefield. As a further development of the M47 Patton tank, it was designed to exceed its predecessor's capabilities. The M48 Patton remained in active service with the U.S. military until it was eventually replaced by the M60. In Vietnam during the war-torn era, the M48 served as the primary battle tank for both the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Its widespread use extended beyond U.S. borders to Cold War allies, particularly NATO countries.
