M42 is a universal screw thread mount for SLRs commonly linked to Praktica and Pentax, although numerous brands such as Fujica, Mamiya/Sekor, and Zenit also employed it. Because of its open standard and relatively long flange distance, the mount has been widely used for adapting lenses from other mounts, excluding Nikon F, with many commercial adapters available for converting M42 lenses to Leica M. One reason to 3D print this adapter is that it's an easy print in one piece, including the M42 screw thread. However, two even stronger reasons exist. Firstly, an M42 to E mount adapter enables Sony's latest E mount bodies to autofocus manual lenses using the Techart Pro LM-EA7 adapter, which has a 700g weight drive limit. To avoid wasting weight, a heavy adapter should be avoided. Secondly, commercial adapters have overly wide flanges that prevent Mamiya/Sekor M42 lenses from mounting due to their aperture ring extending back around the mount flange. In addition, some M42 adapters are too thick on the E side to fit on the LM-EA7. This custom adapter resolves all these issues. The last two shots were captured using the LM-EA7 autofocus with a manual Mamiya/Sekor 55mm f/1.8 lens. Note that you can adjust the autofocus range by not setting the manual focus ring to infinity.
