The M4 Carbine, a shorter and lighter variant of the M16A2 rifle, is a 5.56x45mm NATO gas-operated, direct impingement firearm with a 14.5-inch barrel and telescoping stock. Used primarily by the US Armed Forces, it has replaced the M16 in many combat units as their main infantry weapon. The M4 can be fired in semi-automatic and three-round burst modes, while the M4A1 supports both semi-auto and full-auto firing options. It is capable of mounting an M203 grenade launcher with standard hardware attachment, and features a distinctive barrel step for this purpose.
