M24 â Lightweight Tank M24 was a tank used by the United States during World War II. It was also known as "Chaffee" (British name) or, later, "General Chaffee," named after General Earl R. Chaffee, first commander of US Army tanks. The M24 was designed in 1943-1944 and its production began in April 1944 and continued until August 1945, with a total of 4731 tanks produced. The M24 saw action during World War II, although it had a relatively low profile and was used only in limited numbers. After the war, the M24 remained on US military inventory until the early 1950s. It saw active service in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
