The M16 rifle, formally known as Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16, is an adaptation of ArmaLite's AR-15 for use by the United States military. It supports semi-automatic, three-round burst, and full-automatic firing modes. Colt procured the rights to manufacture the AR-15 design but applies this label exclusively to its civilian, non-military versions. The M16 utilizes a 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge. Initially deployed for use in South Vietnam's jungle warfare operations in 1963, it became the standard service rifle of the U.S. military during the Vietnam War by 1969, replacing the M14 in this role. The M14 was retained in CONUS, Europe, and South Korea until 1970. Since the Vietnam War, the M16 rifle family has been the primary service weapon of the U.S. armed forces.
