The GAU-5/AR mini machine gun is a 7.62×51mm NATO, six-barrel rotary device that unleashes an extremely high rate of fire, firing between 2,000 to 6,000 rounds per minute at sustained intervals.[3] Its Gatling-style rotating barrels are driven by an external power source, usually an electric motor. The "mini" designation distinguishes it from larger caliber designs, like General Electric's earlier 20-millimeter M62 Vulcan, and the name also highlights its use of rifle caliber bullets instead of autocannon shells. Multiple branches within the U.S. military utilize this versatile weapon, with the United States Army identifying versions as M135 and XM197, while the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy label theirs GAU-1/A and GAU-18/A, respectively.
