The Heavy Tank M103 protected the United States Army and the United States Marine Corps during the Cold War era. It held its position as the heaviest and most heavily armed tank in US service until the mid-1970s, when the development of the M1 Abrams took place. The M103 was built at the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant, where it was first accepted into duty in 1957. By 1974, all remaining M103s had been pulled from active service.
