The M24 Sniper Weapon System, used by military and law enforcement, is based on the Remington 700 rifle; 'M24' being its model designation adopted by the US Army as their standard sniper firearm in 1988. A "weapons system", it comprises not only the rifle but also a detachable telescopic sight and additional accessories. Despite using a "long-action" bolt version of Remington 700's receiver, the M24 is chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO "short-action" ammo. This design allows the rifle to be reconfigured for larger cartridges in future.
