It's actually pretty straightforward. Just press F8 and change "Mode" to either 0 (vertex) or 1 (poly), and you should be good to go. Don't forget that for polygon mode, I assume you're referring to "Faces". It's probably in there somewhere. The 3ds max model can only be used by selecting it with a left-click first; then go ahead and try your F8 again. This may seem confusing if the polygon button does nothing when selected in Vertex subobject isolation but trust me, they'll make perfect sense eventually
