This is the "kingdom... of those who have rejected spiritual values by giving in to animal appetites or violence, or by corrupting their human intelligence to deceit or malice towards their own kind." As an allegory, inspired by The Divine Comedy, it represents the soul's journey toward God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of the sin of lust.
