Luohan, British Museum

Luohan, British Museum

myminifactory

This figure was crafted in the Liao dynasty, adhering strictly to the sculptural conventions established during the Tang dynasty. It was unearthed alongside seven others, within a cave situated in Yi county, Hebai province, northern China, where only one remains in its native land. The figure is glazed with colours from the sancai (three colours) palette of the Tang dynasty. The banding on the yellow robe signifies the patchwork worn by monks as a badge of humility. Sincere gratitude is extended to Henry for his assistance in gathering and preserving the Luohan buddhas. This object forms part of "Scan The World".
