Lunulicardia hemicardium BIRUG 19130
sketchfab
BIRUG 19130 represents a fresh example of Lunulicardia hemicardium, commonly referred to as the 'half heart cockle'. This bivalve is commonly found along the coasts of Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan, where it inhabits sandy substrates in subtidal and intertidal zones at depths ranging from 0 to 20 meters. This species of clam is a suspension feeder that typically remains stationary but can move when required. The name Lunulicardia hemicardium translates to 'moon-heart half-heart'; the term 'heart' likely references the shape of its shell, while 'moon' is possibly linked to a structure called a "lunule" on the shell resembling a half moon. This specimen was discovered in the Philippines by G. B. Sowerby III in 1884 and donated to the Lapworth in 1916 before being scanned using an Artec Spider 3D scanner by Sian Miller.
