The first ever planetary rover, a Soviet invention, operated on the lunar surface from November 17, 1970 to September 14, 1971 as part of the Lunokhod series for moon exploration (Project E-8). It had an eleven lunar day working span (equivalent to 10.5 terrestrial months) and traveled a distance of 10,540 meters.
