Lung wedge resection is a surgical procedure that involves removing a small portion of lung tissue to diagnose and treat various conditions affecting the lungs. This minimally invasive operation is typically performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about an hour to complete. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision in the chest wall and then carefully removes the affected lung segment using specialized instruments. The removed tissue is then sent to a laboratory for further examination to determine the underlying cause of any abnormalities detected during the surgery.
