Lundy LIDAR Satellite Model (+ Tutorial)
thingiverse
This model is of Lundy, a small island located off the coast of Devon, United Kingdom: https://www.landmarktrust.org.uk/lundyisland/ . The model utilizes LIDAR Point Cloud Data, which offers highly detailed information, including x, y, and z coordinates for precise scaling. I created this model using point cloud data as I was dissatisfied with the definition provided by online terrain STL generators. The high-definition data used to create this model allowed me to even identify individual buildings, as evident in the point cloud screenshot above; however, I had to simplify it for the final model. I did not design this model to any specific scale but estimate it to be approximately 1:35652. This print was created at a layer height of 0.16mm for the island and 0.28mm for the base. Below, I have detailed the process I used to create this model in case anyone is interested.
