Lunar Patrol - 6 Wheel Rover

This Lunar Patrol rover draws inspiration from the iconic Irem / Williams video game Moon Patrol, released in 1982, which pioneered "parallax side scrolling" as a graphics feature and introduced the concept of continuing gameplay by adding more coins or tokens. The model is styled after an Atari advertisement from 1983, characterized by its angular and simplified retro-60s sci-fi aesthetic, closely resembling the original video game image. To enhance modernity, I've designed hub-less wheels that allow for improved ground clearance and a streamlined way to connect flexible suspension arms, showcasing the capabilities of 3D printing with captive rings. This model is printed in multiple parts, requiring the use of flexible filament for the tires and suspension arms. Sainsmart TPU and MakerGeeks Flex have been successfully used for these components without issue. The hub-less wheels boast a print tolerance of 0.3mm, easily printable on my Prusa I3 MK2s. However, I strongly recommend test printing one wheel before printing the entire model to ensure optimal results. Scaling down is not recommended unless you possess exceptionally good print tolerance; again, test any scaling by printing the wheel first. Two body styles are included: a standard "body top" that prints without supports and additional parts, and a second body allowing for separate printable windows and headlights that can be glued in place. The fit tolerance on these parts is 0.1mm, requiring glue for assembly of the rear window, side windows, and headlights. For static models, gluing is not necessary for the guns and front window due to their tight friction fit.
