The Lunar Module, or "Lem," was the lunar-landing component of NASA's Apollo program, manufactured by Grumman Aircraft. Designed for lunar orbit rendezvous, it consisted of an ascent stage and descent stage, transported to lunar orbit by its CSM counterpart. After completing its mission, the LM was discarded due to its inability to function through Earth's atmosphere or operate aerodynamically. The Lunar Module marked the first manned spacecraft to solely operate within space's vacuum and served as the first and only crewed vehicle to land outside of Earth.
