The Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) went by the nickname "Lem", pronounced as one word. Built for the US Apollo program, this spacecraft's lander portion was designed by Grumman Aircraft to carry two astronauts from lunar orbit down to the surface and back up again. Created with the concept of lunar orbit rendezvous in mind, it consisted of a descent stage and an ascent stage. The Command/Service Module (CSM) ferried the LM into space and took the crew home safely after their mission was complete. Once its job was done, the LM was jettisoned. It couldn't operate anywhere except outer space due to its structural limitations and lack of aerodynamics. Therefore, it could never fly through Earth's atmosphere.
