Luna Moths from the University of Iowa are a species of moth that undergoes an incredible transformation. Emerging as caterpillars on the underside of leaves, they feed voraciously on plants, storing up energy reserves for their future metamorphosis. After several weeks of growth, these larvae attach themselves to a twig or branch and spin a silk girdle around their bodies, preparing for the most dramatic part of their life cycle: pupation. Inside this protective casing, a radical transformation takes place as the caterpillar's body breaks down into its constituent parts and is reorganized into the adult form. Finally, after several weeks of rest, the adult moth emerges from its cocoon, its wings still folded tightly against its back. As it pumps blood into these delicate organs, they expand and dry, ready to unfold and take flight for the first time in their lives. With a final burst of energy, the Luna Moth unfurls its stunning wings, revealing a kaleidoscope of colors that will help attract a mate and ensure the continuation of this remarkable species.
