Luna 17 (Ye-8 series) embarked on an unmanned space mission under the Luna program, also referred to as Lunik 17. The spacecraft launched from a precise Earth parking orbit en route to the Moon and successfully entered lunar orbit on November 15, 1970. Upon landing softly on the Moon in the Sea of Rains, Luna 17 extended dual ramps for the payload, Lunokhod 1, to descend securely to the lunar surface. Equipped with an advanced suite of instruments, including a cone-shaped antenna and a highly directional helical antenna, Lunokhod 1's robust design consisted of a tub-like compartment and eight independently powered wheels on its base.
