Lumiero Handheld Projector
thingiverse
LUMIERO is a compact 35mm projector that I designed as part of my coursework for the university course "Expanded Cinema". It has the capability to handle up to 20m of film and utilizes a camera flash as its light source, which will be upgraded in future versions. With LUMIERO, you can easily bypass the traditional limitation of 24 frames per second by adjusting the speed at which you operate the crank. The projector features a simple mechanism that causes the light to pulse once for each frame, making it possible to do away with a mechanical shutter while maintaining near-perfect synchronization between the light and film. All this requires is placing the film in precisely the right position - an effortless task, even for a beginner. Future updates may include adding a lightsound decoder for old movies, and I encourage anyone interested in building one to proceed - simply replace the backplate with an Arduino for added flexibility and experimenting capabilities. This prototype still faces some mechanical challenges, primarily related to issues within the Geneva mechanism at various stages of projection. The device also lacks a spooling system, which results in film being dropped on the floor. **Special Credits** My sincere thanks to Lars Grochla for capturing the main image at the Hochschultage 2015 exhibition held at Hfk Bremen. I'd also like to extend my gratitude to Mcinnes81 for his work on a modified version of the "Sony Action Cam pistol grip", found on http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:153917. Similarly, I'm thankful to kellyegan for creating the openScad file for 35mm film spools under "35mm film spool (variable sprockets)", available at http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28236.
