Luke the Evangelist is one of the Four Evangelists - four traditionally ascribed authors of canonical Gospels. Early church fathers attributed both Gospel according to Luke and book of Acts of the Apostles to him. Authorship of The Gospel according to Luke and The Acts of the Apostles places Luke as having written a significant portion of the New Testament, even more than Paul the Apostle. Prominent figures in early Christianity such as Jerome and Eusebius later reaffirmed his authorship, although fragile evidence of identity of the author of the works has led to discussion in scholarly circles, both secular and religious. New Testament mentions Luke briefly a few times, and Pauline epistle to the Colossians refers to him as doctor; thus he is thought to have been both physician and disciple of Paul. Christians since faith's early years have regarded him as saint. He is believed to have been martyr, reportedly having been hanged in an olive tree, though some believe otherwise. Roman Catholic Church and other major denominations venerate him as Saint Luke the Evangelist and as patron saint of artists, physicians, surgeons, students, and butchers; his feast day takes place on 18 October.
