Luigi Boniforte was a renowned poet and illustrator born in 1817 who passed away in 1909. He penned an exhaustive historical guide, artistic, and industrial tome on Arona and the scenic route to Lake Maggiore. Lake Maggiore is a vast lake situated on the southern flank of the Alps. It stands as Italy's second-largest lake and the largest body of water in southern Switzerland. The lake's shoreline and surrounding areas are divided between the Italian regions of Piedmont and Lombardy, as well as the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located halfway between Lake Orta and Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore stretches for approximately 65 kilometers (40 miles) between the towns of Locarno and Arona. Archaeological findings around the lake date back to nomadic tribes inhabiting the area during prehistoric times. The first settlements discovered were established during the Copper Age. The region was later under the control of the Ligures, who were eventually replaced by the Celts. The Celts were subsequently conquered by the Romans, who referred to the lake as Verbanus Lacus or Lacus Maximus. Following the downfall of the Western Roman Empire, the lake fell under various dominations. Most of the present-day settlements originated in the Middle Ages, when the lake was governed by the Del la Torre, Visconti, Borromeo, and Habsburg families. Alessandro Volta first isolated methane while analyzing marsh gas from Lake Maggiore between 1776 and 1778.
