Ludwig Mond, a renowned chemist, industrialist and art connoisseur, emerged from Kassel, Germany in 1839, only to embark on a successful journey that would take him to Britain in 1867. As one of the most prominent industrial chemists of his era, he pioneered large-scale production methods for alkali in the textile industry, as well as ammonia, 'Mond gas' and nickel. Mond's vast wealth was also invested in an impressive collection of early Italian art, which he generously bequeathed to the National Gallery upon his passing. The bronze statuette on display here is a testament to Mond's refined taste, crafted by Edouard Lanteri, a skilled sculptor active from 1848 to 1917.
