Ludovisi Gaul Killing Himself and His Wife
sketchfab
Ludovisi Gaul is taking a fatal step in a Roman marble group, with the man plunged a sword into his chest while looking back defiantly as he supports the dying figure of his wife with his left arm. The sculpture is a Roman copy from the early 2nd century AD, based on a Hellenistic original created around 230-20 BC, one of several bronze groups commissioned by Attalus I after his victories over the Galatians in Gaul. Other notable Roman marble copies include the famous Dying Gaul and the lesser-known Kneeling Gaul, both part of the same project initiated by Attalus.
