This marble sculpture by Philippe Bertrand (1663-1704) originated in France, likely Paris, before 1704. According to ancient Roman history, Lucretia was a virtuous patrician who was brutally raped by Sextus Tarquinius, son of Rome's last king. Faced with this horrific injustice, she stabbed herself and her tragic death led to the end of the monarchy and the establishment of the republic in Rome. Although the connection between this episode and monarchial France is uncertain, the reclining format allowed a dramatic re-enactment of the heroine's acceptance of the dagger's fatal thrust; she kicks out one leg as an involuntary reaction. Bertrand showcased the marble at the 1704 Salon.
