Lucknow Drum

Historically, drums were utilized as signalling devices on battlefields before they gained widespread use in music. This particular drum is the Regimental bass drum, which was used during the Siege of Lucknow in 1857. Given the cacophony of a battlefield, using drums for signalling would have been essential since their sound could be heard above the din of war. However, shortly after that, they were replaced by bugles on the battlefield due to their ease of portability. The drum features the Royal Coat of Arms, as well as the battle honors of the 32nd Regiment of Foot. Constructed from wood with animal hide skins, the drum would have been played using large drumsticks. To facilitate movement while carrying it, the drummer wore a strap around his neck, allowing him to walk freely.
